Here in Beaumont Texas we have an organization called Beaumont Main Street. This organization seeks to protect and restore downtown Beaumont and encourage new business growth in the downtown area. Each fall they have an event called Dogtoberfest which has been voted best event by the Texas Main Street Association.
This year I have been asked to create a dog sculpture for "Yappy Hour." Yappy Hour is a festivity of Dogtoberfest where people gather to have a good time and bid on items created for the auction. Last year I created a dog bed for Yappy Hour which sold for 500.00.
This I have been asked to sculpt a three dimensional dog which is similar to the Dogtoberfest logo. We will cast 15 of these dogs which will be decorated by youth from southeast Texas. These dogs will then be auctioned off at Yappy Hour.
This is the maquette (French for scale model) I sculpted to get an overall idea of what the dog will look like in 3D. (No it doesn't look like a rat!) This morning I glued up styrofoam from which I will sculpt the dog. I will them coat it with plaster and sand it smooth. The dog will be moulded then cast in fiberglass and mounted. Kids that have been selected to decorate them will get a few weeks to work on them then they will be auctioned off. Stay tuned!
