I finished the basic sculpting of the dog last week but we were not able to find a shop who had the time to manufacture the dogs within our time frame. My friends were all sympathetic and they have done things in a hurry for me before but this was a really big project. We are going to shelve it until next year. We are still going to make dogs but they will be cut out of HDU on a water jet cutter and I'll sculpt it a little bit, just a little.
I recently recieved some pictures of the ceiling we completed earlier this summer in Scranton PA. Jerry Rittenbeck is doing a wonderful job with the finishes. Take a look. Here is a shot of Jerry applying the gold leaf. It is quite a difference from the construction photos. I know the client is very pleased with the ceiling. Otherwise there is a lot going in but still mostly in the design stages. I know I haven't had much to post lately. I've been busy working on new designs and taking care of some other responsibilities so there hasn't been much to show. The dog is coming along. I'll have it finished by this weekend. It is further along than it shows but it has been a fun little job. Here in Beaumont Texas we have an organization called Beaumont Main Street. This organization seeks to protect and restore downtown Beaumont and encourage new business growth in the downtown area. Each fall they have an event called Dogtoberfest which has been voted best event by the Texas Main Street Association. This year I have been asked to create a dog sculpture for "Yappy Hour." Yappy Hour is a festivity of Dogtoberfest where people gather to have a good time and bid on items created for the auction. Last year I created a dog bed for Yappy Hour which sold for 500.00. This I have been asked to sculpt a three dimensional dog which is similar to the Dogtoberfest logo. We will cast 15 of these dogs which will be decorated by youth from southeast Texas. These dogs will then be auctioned off at Yappy Hour. This is the maquette (French for scale model) I sculpted to get an overall idea of what the dog will look like in 3D. (No it doesn't look like a rat!) This morning I glued up styrofoam from which I will sculpt the dog. I will them coat it with plaster and sand it smooth. The dog will be moulded then cast in fiberglass and mounted. Kids that have been selected to decorate them will get a few weeks to work on them then they will be auctioned off. Stay tuned! Jerry Rittenbeck finished painting the ceiling medallion in the guest bedroom up in Pennsylvania. Here is a description of the work from my client: "Jerry Ritterbeck and his associate just finished painting the ceiling in the downstairs guestroom. I think it looks wonderful! They had to carefully apply glaze on the raised parts (after doing two layers of white pigmented shellac and one coat of paint on the while central area) and then repaint the rest of the ceiling." I am very pleased with the outcome. Jerry has an extensive background in finishes and has restored the finishes in many historical churchs and cathedrals in the northeast. I can't wait to see the hand-laid medallion together with the chandelier. I know the room will look great. |
