Did you know... So you want to do a mailing. Here is how you can save postage money. Postcards are great, but if you want a postcard postal rate, it can’t be bigger than 4 x 6.25. You can do a bigger postcard but it will need to go at the letter rate. The biggest a letter can be is 6.125 x 11.5. After that you are in the realm of flat rates. If you have a mailing list of 500 or more you can send a postcard or letter out at a pre-sorted rate, which can be first class or 3rd class and saves a lot of money. But this is where it gets interesting. If you are a for-profit company and your letter is more than an ounce in weight, then your postage goes up. Ask your designer to design the mailing to be under an ounce. If you are a non-profit company you can use a non-profit rate (is always 3rd class and needs to be a bulk mailing or 500 or more). This rate will allow a postcard or letter, no matter what the size, to cost the same amount from .1 ounces to 3.3 ounces. To get a non-profit rate an application must be submitted to the post office, and it can take weeks to be approved. Once approved the non-profit rate can be used at any time, but only at the post office where the paperwork was submitted. Do not wait until the last minute to take care of your non-profit paperwork for obvious reasons. Please note that only post offices that have bulk mailing departments can accept these types of mailings. Your best resource for information is the Post Office itself.
